Vocal Skills Studio

Andy's teaching base is a custom-built studio in the Theatre Buildings, St Helens. Overlooking the town centre and civic buildings, the studio is light, airy and spacious.

A Victorian property, the Theatre Buildings retain much of their original charm and character, with features such as a wrought iron staircase, ornate fireplaces and polished wooden floors.

The teaching room itself is modernised and fully equipped to record your lessons.

NB Please be aware that the studio is on the top floor, up two flights of stairs. If you have accessibility issues, you can still work with Andy via online Zoom lessons.

Vocal Skills - how to find the studio

The Vocal Skills studio is situated in St Helens town centre.

If you're driving from the North, it's easily accessible from the M6, A571 and A580. There is ample cheap parking available in the town centre, and some 2 hour free parking bays dotted around the nearby streets, including three right outside the studio (subject to availability). Andy can provide a map of parking spaces on request.

If you're travelling by bus, the studio is directly opposite St Helens Bus Station. Buses run from here to all major towns and cities in the North West.

If you come by train, St Helens Central station is just 0.2 miles away, a short 4 minute walk to the studio.

Coaching designed around you

Andy is a full-time, professional vocal coach, not a school teacher, singer or pianist giving a few singing lessons in their spare time. Unlike a lot of voice teachers, Andy does not insist on long-term tuition, where students have to attend regular lessons, repeating the same exercises until their voice improves. You can attend as often as you like, but there's no compulsion to attend every week or every fortnight. In fact, many students only book sessions every 4 to 6 weeks.

Estill Voice Training™ is known for producing quick results. Quite often, Andy finds that long-standing problems can be fixed in the first few lessons. At your first session, Andy will give you an assessment of your abilities and draw up a plan that ensures you get to where you want to be, as quickly as possible.

Specialist Lessons

• Musical TheatreAn efficient Musical Theatre (MT) technique should allow you to express subtle changes in mood, regardless of where you are in your vocal range. In other words, you must be able to sing ANY note in ANY tone of voice.
• OperaOpera is a high energy form of singing, with huge physical requirements, involving projecting the voice to the back of a theatre, over an orchestra and without any amplification. Opera singers have to undergo specific training to meet these demands.
• PopTraditional, Classically-based singing lessons are not appropriate for modern commercial singers. To learn to sing Pop and R&B, you need to understand the very different requirements of each style, and how to adapt your voice to meet those requirements.
